Be part of whisky history as we celebrate our Whisky of the Year 2020 winner: Benromach 15 Year Old.
Join us and former Gordon & MacPhail managing director, industry legend Michael Urquhart, as he steps out of retirement to host a one-off tasting and accept our Whisky of the Year award on behalf of the iconic Speyside distillery that he helped reopen.
Benromach whisky was founded in 1898 and currently holds the title of smallest working distillery in Speyside, employing only two people to cover its production. It was mothballed in 1983, but since 1993, the distillery has been under the ownership of world-famous Elgin-based independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail. The company made history in 1998 by restarting production at the distillery with an official opening overseen by H.R.H The Prince of Wales.
Benromach 15 Year Old, The Whisky Exchange Whisky of the Year 2020, was launched in 2015 and has a distinctive cream, cacao and orchard fruit character. It’s an excellent example of Speyside spirit and a crowd-pleaser – both for novices and connoisseurs alike. Tasted and judged blind, we believe the old-school, no-nonsense Speyside character are why it was chosen as Whisky of the Year.
We invite you to experience the best of this distillery with a man who was instrumental in the revival of what was once Speyside’s best kept secret.
After qualifying as a chartered accountant in Edinburgh, Michael Urquhart returned to his family business, Gordon & MacPhail, and started a career that spanned more than three decades – including leading the company as manging director for seven years before retirement. His name is widely respected and recognised in the industry, much like his father’s, George Urquhart, who many claim to be somewhat of a godfather to scotch whisky. Having overseen countless bottlings and seen first-hand just how much single malt whisky has evolved over the years, it is no wonder Michael is featured in the Icons of Whisky Awards Hall of Fame. Much like his father, Michael takes great pleasure in sharing his passion for whisky around the globe. We are honoured to host Michael congratulate him on Benromach’s Whisky of the Year 2020 success – a distillery that is very close to his heart.
