Charring is an age-old method for reawakening barrels to intensify the taste. Jameson Black Barrel is a tribute to the legacy of charring barrels before filling them. Their coopers call it “bringing the wood back to life”. Black Barrel is a triple distilled blend of rich pot still and grain whiskey aged in a mixture of sherry casks and bourban barrels. The bourbon barrels undergo an additional charring to deliver enhanced flavour.
Jameson was established in 1780 on Bow Street in Dublin. Since the decline of Irish whiskey in the 19th Century, Jameson moved its production to the New Midleton Distillery in Cork. Irish whiskey struggled along through the millennium with a handful of distilleries operating on the island of Ireland. Thankfully tastes changed and what was once seen as survival changed to innovation in the category.
Jameson Black Barrel is the perfect Irish whiskey for cocktails due to its heavy pot still component that holds up against other ingredients adding spicy notes. Combine this with their single batch grain which adds a sweetness to the whiskey it cries out to be stirred down into an Old Fashioned.
